Scaleway plans AI supercomputer in Sweden

French cloud provider Scaleway has announced plans to build an AI supercomputer in Sweden, its first outside France. The system is intended to serve startups, AI companies and businesses across Europe.

The planned supercomputer will use AMD Instinct MI355X chips. French industrial group Bull is expected to build and maintain the system, with other technology partners contributing servers, networking, storage and cooling.

Why Sweden?

Scaleway selected Sweden for its low-carbon energy supply and growing technology sector. The company entered the Swedish market earlier this year through a partnership with telecom operator Tele2.

Locating computing infrastructure in Sweden could give European organisations another regional option for developing and running demanding AI workloads.

More choice for AI computing

The project is also notable for its use of AMD hardware and ROCm software. This adds to the range of AI infrastructure options available to European customers alongside systems built around other accelerator platforms.

More choice can help organisations compare performance, software compatibility, availability and cost when selecting infrastructure for AI development.

What businesses should consider

A new supercomputer does not automatically make every AI project cheaper or easier to move. Organisations should assess the software frameworks they use, the availability of the required hardware and the location where their workloads and data will be processed.

  • Check whether existing AI software supports the planned hardware and software stack.
  • Compare expected performance, availability and operating costs.
  • Review data-location, security and service requirements before moving workloads.
The system is a planned project. Its availability, specifications and commercial services may change as construction and deployment progress.
**Key takeaway:** Europe is gradually adding more AI computing capacity and hardware options. Scaleway’s planned Swedish system is one development to watch as businesses assess where and how to run AI workloads.
